Lee breaks free for solo Women's Amateur lead; Papatolis five-strokes clear in Women's Mid-Amateur

Round 2 of the Washington Women’s Amateur and Women’s Mid-Amateur Championships took place today at The Home Course in DuPont, Wash. Under partly cloudy skies with slightly more wind than the opening day, Grace Lee assumed control of the Women’s Amateur lead, while Tina Papatolis expanded her gap at the top spot to five strokes.

Grace Lee

Grace Lee of Bellevue shot 71 in the first round to share the lead, and she matched that score in round 2 to take it outright at 2-under par. It was an adventurous afternoon for Lee, whose card featured six birdies and five bogeys. Her second nine saw only two pars. As the only player with multiple under-par rounds, Lee will look to translate her one-shot lead into her first WA Golf title.

Lee will be grouped with Darae Chung and Suzie Tran for the final round, teeing off at 11:10.

Tina Papatolis

Tina Papatolis of Issaquah held the Women’s Mid-Amateur 18-hole lead outright, and she turned in another steady and consistent round to expand that position. Two birdies against one bogey highlighted her first nine, and a 1-under second nine contributed to a total round of 70. Papatolis spent much of the morning tied at 2-over for the championship with Desirae Clarke, but Clarke’s second-nine 40 allowed Papatolis to hold a comfortable five-shot lead ahead of the final day.

In search of her second Women’s Mid-Amateur title, Papatolis will be joined by Clarke and Mandy Wong in round 3, with an 8:30 tee time.

The Washington Women’s Amateur and Women’s Mid-Amateur are two of 14 championships conducted annually by WA Golf.
