Snoqualmie Ridge Wins Member Club Teams

Kingston, Wash. (May 31, 2012) –For the fourth year in a row, men’s and women’s teams from TPC at Snoqualmie Ridge stole the show at the Washington State Men’s and Women’s Member Club Team Championships, held this year at White Horse Golf Club.

In the Men’s Championship, Chris Bae of Issaquah, Vince Caluori of North Bend, and Charles Schmidt and Fred Johnson of Snoqualmie, shot a 217 in the final for a two-day total of 417 and a ten stroke victory over Semiahmoo Golf and Country Club. This was the third win at the Member Club Team for Bae, Caluouri, and Schmidt, and the second with Fred Johnson, who joined the team prior to last years’ victory. Bae also took home the men’s individual low gross honor with a two-day total of 3-under 141, his fourth consecutive men’s low gross honor.

“It’s feels great. We love this event,” said Caluori, about the victory. The team said the turning point was the par-4 11th hole. “Charles (Schmidt) holed out a 30 yard putt from off the green for birdie and net eagle,” said Johnson, “then Chris (Bae) made a putt from probably 40 feet for another birdie, and I made a 10-foot birdie as well, and that definitely propelled us to the victory.” “That was spectacular,” added Caluori.

In second place, with a two-day team score of 427, were Frank Vick of Surrey, B.C., Steve Savage of Surrey, B.C., John Gallacher of Burnaby, B.C., and Keith Manifold of Port Moody, B.C., representing Semiahmoo Golf and Country Club. Semiahmoo G&CC entered the final round one stroke back of TPC at Snoqualmie Ridge, but could not keep up the torrid pace, ultimately finishing ten strokes back with a two-day total of 427.

Martin Pool of Kenmore, a member of the Riverbend Golf Complex squad, earned men’s individual low net with a two-day total of 4-under 140.

In the Women’s Championship, Molly Grossi of Sammamish, Diana Chow of Redmond, and Kim Ponti and Roberta Smith of Issaquah, the three-time defending champions from TPC at Snoqualmie Ridge, made a huge charge in the final round to win their fourth consecutive championship, posting a two-day total of 430 for a seven stroke victory over Monica Boegl , Vikki Hurt, Tarry Decker, and Marianne Jorgenson, all from Bainbridge Island and representing Wing Point Golf and Country Club.

When asked how the final round went, the champions pointed right to Chow. “Our pal here (Chow) played great today. She really carried us,” said Ponti. “We played some holes bad and some well, and it turned out great for us,” she added.

Monica Boegl won the women’s individual low gross competition with a score of 16-over 160, while Chow won the women’s individual low net competition with a score of 4-under 140.

White Horse Golf Club, originally designed by Cynthia Dye McGarey, opened in 2007 and was named by Golf Digest as one of the top-10 affordable U.S. golf courses to open that year. The layout immediately posed a formidable challenge to even the most skilled player. After the course was purchased by the Suquamish Tribe in 2010, a $700,000 remodel began that included the removal of 63 bunkers, the cutting of over 100 trees, and the placement of 400,000 square feet of sod. The slope and course rating have subsequently dropped, making the course more appealing to the weekend golfer.

Newly-Renovated White Horse Golf Club Set To Host 7th Washington State Men’s And Women’s Member Club Team Championship

Kingston, Wash. (Tuesday, May 29, 2012) – A buzz is in the Kingston air as White Horse Golf Club prepares to host the 7th Washington State Men’s and Women’s Member Club Team Championship, its first WSGA championship since Northwest architect John Harbottle III completed a nearly $700,000 remodel last winter.  This year’s field consists of 19 four-person teams representing Washington State Golf Association member clubs.  Eight teams will compete in the Men’s Championship, while 11 will battle in the Women’s Championship. TPC at Snoqualmie Ridge has had success on both the men’s and women’s side as of late, having won the last three years.
The Washington State Member Club Team Championship format calls for each four-person team to be from the same WSGA member club and consist of either all men or all women. This is a 36-hole stroke play competition, with each team counting one gross score and two net scores per hole for the team total each day.
Chris Bae of Issaquah, Vince Calouri of North Bend, and Fred Johnson and Charles Schmidt of Snoqualmie, the defending champions from TPC at Snoqualmie Ridge, return in search of their third Member Club Team Championship in the last four years (2009, ’11). Last year’s victory was the second win at the Member Club Team (’09) for Bae, Calouri, and Schmidt, but first with new teammate, Fred Johnson. The team shot a two-day total score of 409, led by Bae’s individual low gross score of 4-over 148, which earned him his third consecutive men’s low gross honor. Taking home the men’s individual low net honors with a two-day net total of 7-under 137 was Rick Van Haelst of Sammamish.
Three-time defending champions out of TPC at Snoqualmie Ridge also lead the women’s field. Diana Chow of Redmond, Molly Grossi of Sammamish, and Kim Ponti and Roberta Smith of Issaquah make up the team that hopes to earn a four-peat this year. The team from Riverbend Golf Complex, which included Laura Risher from Issaquah, Mary Ryan from Renton, and Kathy Landino and Shari Boggs of Kent look to improve upon their runner-up finish from last year, when they made a five shot comeback in the final round to tie TPC with a two-day total team score of 443. However, TPC at Snoqualmie Ridge was able to secure the victory on the first hole of a sudden death playoff.
Ann Swanson of Redmond won the women’s individual low gross competition with a score of 21-over 165, while Rose Simmons of Renton won the women’s individual low net competition with a score of 3-under 141.
White Horse Golf Club, originally designed by Cynthia Dye McGarey, opened in 2007 and was named by Golf Digest as one of the top-10 affordable U.S. golf courses to open that year. From the beginning, White Horse presented a formidable challenge, even to the most skilled players. When it held the Washington State Men’s Amateur in 2010, only the winner, Jeremy Wendelken, finished under par and, on the final day, 22 of the 59 players who made the cut failed to break 80.
In 2010, the course was purchased out of foreclosure by the nearby Suquamish Tribe and work began to make the course more appealing for the weekend golfer. The slope rating dropped from 136 to 126 (113 is a standard course), the course rating dropped from 69.0 to 67.9, and the course became considerably more playable. The renovation, performed by John Harbottle III, included the removal of 63 bunkers, the cutting of over 100 trees, and the placement of 400,000 square feet of sod.
Besides the “softening” of the course, plans are also in the works for construction of a clubhouse, which is scheduled to start this year.
