WSGA Women's, Senior Women's, and Super Senior Women's Amateur Championship - Round One Recap

Alivia Brown of Gig Harbor, Wash. leads the 22nd Washington State Women’s Amateur Championship after one round at The Cedars at Dungeness in Sequim, Wash.

Brown shot a one-under-par 71 and leads by one stroke heading into day two of the 54-hole championship. She made three birdies on the front nine, and was four-under-par before making three bogies on the back nine. Brown finished Runner-Up last year in the Women’s Amateur to Jordan Ferreira, who is not in the field this year.

Kristin Strankman of Richland, Wash. trails by one stroke after firing an even-par 72, while Rachel Lewis of Gig Harbor, Wash. holds third place alone after an opening round of one-over-par 73.

In the Senior Amateur Championship, Yeong Gray of Lakewood, Wash. leads by two after a six-over-par 78 in today’s first round. She fired a one-under-par 36 on the front nine, but a back nine of seven-over-par 42 brought her closer to the rest of the field heading into round two.

In a four-way tie for second place are three-time champion Lisa Smego of Olympia, two-time champion Yasue Alkins of Steilacoom, Wash., 2011 champion Ginny Burkey of Eugene, Ore., and Denise Kieffer of University Place, Wash. All four posted scores of eight-over-par 80 today.

After one round of the Super Senior Amateur Championship, Witta Priester of Sequim, Wash. leads by two with an opening round of 11-over-par 83. Mary Ryan of Renton, Wash., stands in second place by herself after shooting 13-over-par 85, while Judy Christensen of Allyn, Wash. holds third place alone with a 15-over-par 87.
