Folsom and Harris Claim Their Eighth Washington State Women’s Best-Ball Championship

Burlington, Wash. (May 22, 2012) – Leslie Folsom and Jane Harris, both of Seattle and members at Rainier Golf and Country Club, survived the elements and a strong field to capture the 13th Washington State Women’s Best-Ball Championship at Skagit Golf and Country Club in Burlington, Wash. The pair has now won an astonishing 8 out of the 13 championships since the event started in 2000.
Folsom and Harris started the final round tied with Denise Kieffer of University Place and LoriAnne Johns of Tacoma, and the two teams traded punches for most of the day. Folsom’s birdie on the par-4 4th hole provided the first lead change in the final round but Kieffer responded with a birdie on the par-3 5th hole to draw even with Folsom and Harris at 1-under.
Harris birdied the par-5 9th to push the lead to two strokes, a lead they would not relinquish on the back nine thanks to a timely birdie by Harris on the par-5 15th hole, her second of the day. Kieffer and Johns had one more chance to draw even but Kieffer’s birdie pitch on the 18th hole came up short. Folsom polished off a short par putt on the 18th green to secure the victory and continue their dominance in the Washington State Women’s Best-Ball Championship.
When asked how the last couple days went, Folsom pointed to the quality of the field. “This was probably one of the closest wins we’ve had,” she said. “We just had to put up a number and we did.” A turning point in the championship was Harris’ play on the par-5 15th, a hole she played at 3-under for the week, including a crucial hole out eagle during the first round. “It was lucky,” was all she could muster.
2003 Champions Mimi Racicot and Jani Japar of Seattle posted the low round of the day, carding a 2-under par 71, but ultimately fell two strokes shy of the leaders. They finished in a tie for third with Alison Murdoch of Victoria, B.C. and Catherine Allen of Bellingham, who entered the final round one stroke off the lead but could not get it going en route to an even par 73 today.
