Get involved in WA Golf

Volunteers are the backbone of Washington Golf. Throughout our nearly 100-year history WA Golf is thankful and fortunate to have dedicated members committed to giving back to the game—serving as board and committee members, rules officials, course marshals, score keepers, course raters, handicap chairs, club representatives, coaches and more.

We encourage our members to join us and become a bigger part of WA Golf by volunteering.

VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES

2018 George Holland Volunteer of the Year

The George Holland Award annually recognizes volunteers who have made extraordinary contributions to Washington Golf and the game of golf throughout the WA Golf territory. These individuals contribute many hours in time and effort, as well as resources, to our Association, simply to give back to the game they love. They are the unsung heroes” of WA Golf. The award’s namesake is a longtime volunteer, contributor, and two-time past president, George Holland.

Volunteer of the Year: Ernie LockwoodWA Golf is proud to award Ernie Lockwood the 2018 George Holland Volunteer of the Year Award.

  • Volunteered 25 days for WA Golf and PNGA Championships, and USGA Qualifiers
  • Attended and participated in 12 WA Golf Course Ratings
  • Volunteered at several Washington Junior Golf Association (WJGA) tournaments
  • Volunteered at several high school and collegiate tournaments
  • Certified WA Golf Rules Official – scored over 90% on USGA Rules Exam
  • Certified WA Golf Course Rating Team Member
  • WA Golf Club Representative since 2000

Ernie has been a dedicated volunteer and club representative since 2000, representing Kitsap Golf and Country Club in Bremerton. In 2018, Ernie went above and beyond the definition of a volunteer. He spent hundreds of hours traveling and volunteering for junior tournaments, championships, and course ratings all around the state.

He is a man of many talents, although didn’t play golf as a kid. “I didn’t have any money for it,” he said. “And why would anybody want to chase a white ball around a cow pasture.”

He first picked up a golf club in 1962, during his first year attending the United States Naval Academy in Annapolis, Maryland.

In 1995 he retired after 30 years active duty in the Navy as a submarine officer, with his last tour of duty serving as commander of Submarine Base Bangor, near Bremerton.

After retiring from the Navy, he remodeled cabinets until 2012, when he started devoting himself completely to the Rules of golf.

At WA Golf and PNGA championships and USGA Qualifiers, Ernie is a reliable Starter and Rules Official or Referee, and many times all at the same time.

And when he isn’t assisting with championships or qualifiers, Ernie is with the WA Golf Course Rating Team rating many courses throughout the state. WA Golf is very fortunate to have such an enthusiastic and thoughtful volunteer like Ernie Lockwood.

COURSE RATERS WA Golf rates Member-Club and Non-Member Club golf courses in accordance with the USGA Course and Slope Rating System.

The WA Golf Course Rating team is comprised of WA Golf staff and groups of trained volunteers throughout the various regions of Washington State and Northern Idaho. When rating a golf course, the course rating team evaluates each hole from every set of tees to gather the necessary data for each of the various obstacles.

Interested in volunteering as a course rater or want more information on how course rating works? Please contact WA Golf Director of Handicapping & Course Rating Nate Schroeder at nschroeder@wagolf.org.

CLUB MEMBER REPRESENTATIVES serve as a liaison between WA Golf and their Club. If you have any questions about the program, or how to get involved, please contact the WA Golf Membership Department.
