Round One Recap: WSGA Senior & Super Senior Men's Amateur

The first rounds of the Washington State Senior Men’s Amateur Championship and Super Senior Men’s Amateur Championship were held today at Gig Harbor, Wash.’s Canterwood Golf & Country Club.

The 54-hole stroke play championships conclude Thursday, October 1, and are being held concurrently. Both championships are being conducted by the Washington State Golf Association (WSGA).

Brian Shanks of Edmonds, Wash. emerged as the early leader in the Senior Men’s Championship after firing an opening round of one-under-par 71. Shanks made a total of five birdies on a challenging golf course, and his only real stumble was on hole 15, where he made double bogey.

Keith Crimp of Ellensburg, Wash. and Christopher Scott of Kirkland, Wash. are in a tie for second at even-par 72. Crimp claimed the WSGA Senior Men’s Championship in 2010. Scott’s round was highlighted by an eagle on the par-5 14th hole.

John Bracken of Seattle, Wash. holds fourth place alone at one-over-par 73. Bracken looks to finish his season strong after winning the Pacific Northwest Senior Men’s Amateur in June.

In the Super Senior Amateur Championship, Fritz Naumetz of Phoenix, Ariz. leads following his opening round score of one-over-par 73. Naumetz birdied holes 16, 17, and 18 to finish and take a single-shot lead into the second round.

Ron Garland of Bozeman, Mont. shares second place with Rick Weihe of Bellingham, Wash. at two-over-par 74.

Garland racked up five birdies on his back nine to over come a couple of bad holes earlier in his round. He won the PNGA Super Senior Men’s Amateur this year.

In fourth place in Jeff Remington of Edmonds, Wash, just two strokes off of the lead at three-over-par 75. Remington won this event in 2013.
