McNelis’ Win Second Annual WSGA Parent-Child Championship in Dramatic Finish

Ocean Shores, Wash. (July 23, 2010) – Jim and Joey McNelis of Gig Harbor, Wash., used a strong finish on the back nine to win the Second Annual WSGA Parent-Child Championship at Ocean Shores Golf Course. The Championship was played in Chapman format which is a 2-person team competition where both players tee off then switch balls, each play a second shot then select the better of the two and finish the hole in alternate shot format.

The McNelis’ birdied three of their final five holes to beat Jon and Matt Rawitzer of Bellingham, Wash., and Kelly and Conner Denessen of Snohomish, Wash., by 1 stroke after a round of 1-under par 71. Needing a birdie on the 18th hole, Joey would hit his tee shot on the 165 yard, par-3 to roughly 45 feet below the hole to set up the dramatic finish for his father Jim who recently won the Tacoma City Senior Amateur. Jim calmly snaked in the lengthy putt to seal the victory.

“Joey had an 18-footer for birdie and I was just trying to take the pressure off Joey and I ended up making it to win.” Jim said. “That’s what makes these championships fun.”

Defending champions, Richard and Brandon Cardwell of Tacoma, Wash., finished in sixth place with a gross total 4-over par 76.
