Craig and Cody Roth Win 4th Annual Washington State Parent-Child Championship

Federal Way, Wash. (July 20, 2012) – Thunderstorms could not spoil the day for Craig and Cody Roth of Bellingham, Wash. as they claimed the title at the 4rd Annual Washington State Parent-Child Championship conducted by the Washington State Golf Association (WSGA) on a rare lightning filled morning at Twin Lakes Golf and Country Club.

Storms delayed competition for three hours as lightning and heavy rain passed through early this morning. The Chapman format is a 2-person team competition where both players tee off and then switch balls, each plays a second shot and then the team selects the better of the two and finishes the hole in alternate shot format.

The father and son Roth team got off to a slow start making the turn at 2-over par 38, but lit the fire on the back nine making birdies on #10, #11, #13, #15 and #18 to offset a lone bogey at #14 to clinch the title in true champion form with a 2-under par 70. When asked what they did differently on the back nine, Craig replied, “Well, Cody gave me a talking to and told me to start hitting it better. He made some putts and we were off and rolling.” (Watch the Roth’s interview here.)

Runners-up are the team of Rachel and Michael Lewis of Gig Harbor, Wash. with a round of 1-under par 71.  Rachel, an incoming freshman on the Washington State University girls golf team, just returned from the Ryder Cup Junior Academy in Florida to play with her father who taught her how to play the game.

Low net honors went to Kayla Monroe of Tumwater, Wash. and Ray Monroe of Union, Wash., who finished with a 9-under par round of 63.
