Jason and Mark Aspelund of Federal Way shot 3-under 69 to win the 9th Annual Washington State Parent-Child Championship, held today at High Cedars Golf Club in Orting, Wash.

“We had kind of a game plan going into today,” Jason said. “We knew where our opportunities would be and we wanted to make sure we took advantage of them. We made a long birdie putt on hole eight, and that really kick-started our round.”

Said Mark, “We’ve played the Chapman format before, so we knew where our strengths were and how to manage that part of our game.”

This is the second title in the championship for the Aspelunds, having also won in 2013. The Aspelunds finished one shot ahead of Brandon and Richard Cardwell of Tacoma, who had won this championship in 2009.

The 18-hole championship will have gross and net champions and was played in a Chapman stroke play format, with two players playing as partners, each playing from the teeing ground and each player playing his or her partner’s ball for the second shot. After the second shot, including par-3 holes, partners select the ball with which they wish to score and then played that ball alternately to complete the hole.

Depending on each golfer’s skill level and time flexibility, the two differing courses provide a challenging, enjoyable, and always rewarding experience of golf.
