The 29th Washington State Senior Men’s and the 8th Super Senior Men’s Amateur Championships are to be held concurrently at Canterwood Golf & Country Club in Gig Harbor, Wash. Tuesday, September 29 to Thursday, October 1. Both championships are 54 holes of stroke play and are conducted by the Washington State Golf Association (WSGA).

Last year’s Senior and Super Senior Men’s Championships were held at the Cedars at Dungeness in Sequim, Wash. Tom Brandes of Bellevue, Wash. won the Senior Men’s by five strokes to capture his fourth consecutive title (2011-2014), after being the only competitor to finish under par. Gudmund Lindbjerg of Port Moody, B.C. dominated the Washington State Super Senior Championship, cruising to an eight-stroke victory.
Brandes may not be able to defend his title at Canterwood this year. He is heading to the U.S. Senior Amateur Championship after earning medalist honors at the sectional qualifying held at RMG Club at Oakbrook in Lakewood, Wash. The championship is being held in Egg Harbor Township, N.J. September 26 to October 1, so it will depend on how Brandes fares in that championship.
Some notable names in this year’s Senior Men’s field include last year’s runners-up, Tom Hale of Lakewood, Wash. and Karl Smith of Gig Harbor, Wash., who is playing at his home club; John Bracken of Seattle, Wash., who won this year’s PNGA Senior Men’s Championship; Dick Cartmell of Richland, Wash., who made it to the semifinals of the PNGA Men’s Master-40 Championship earlier this year; Paul Houvener of Mill Creek, Wash., who finished runner-up in the PNGA Senior Men’s Amateur; the 2009 WSGA Senior Men’s champion, Larry Daniels of Seattle, Wash.; and the 2010 WSGA Senior Men’s champion, Keith Crimp of Ellensburg, Wash.
The Super Senior Men’s field includes the reigning champion, Lindbjerg; this year’s PNGA Super Senior champion, Ron Garland of Bozeman, Mont.; last year’s runner up, Shelton Washburn of Port Ludlow, Wash.; the 1998 WSGA Senior Men’s champion, Rick Weihe of Bellingham, Wash.; the 2003 WSGA Senior Men’s champion and the 2013 WSGA Super Senior Men’s champion, Jeff Remington of Edmonds, Wash.; and Bruce Richards of Seattle, who won the Super Senior in 2009 and 2010 and also the 2000 Senior, which was held that year at Canterwood.
