Jeff Gallagher of Henderson, Nev. was the only player in a field of 58 to shoot under par in earning medalist honors at today’s U.S. Senior Open qualifying held on the Olympic Course at Gold Mountain Golf Club in Bremerton, Wash. With a 4-under par 68, Gallagher claimed the only available spot from this qualifier to advance to the 2016 U.S. Senior Open, which will be held August 11-14 at Scioto Country Club in Columbus, Ohio.

The Washington State Golf Association (WSGA) is the local representative of the United States Golf Association (USGA) and conducted this qualifier for the U.S. Senior Open Championship.

Gallagher, a teaching pro in the Las Vegas area, had five birdies on the day against one bogey. He has twice won on the Web.com Tour, and had two top-10 finishes on the PGA Tour in 1998. The son of a club professional, Gallagher’s brother Jim plays on the PGA Tour, and his sister Jackie plays on the LPGA Tour.

The U.S. Senior Open is open to professional golfers and amateurs with a USGA Handicap Index not exceeding 3.4 who are 50 years of age at the start of championship play. Sectional qualifying is being played over 18 holes at 34 sites across the United States between June 14 and July 11.

A total of 2,791 golfers have entered to play in this year’s championship. The USGA received entries for the 37th U.S. Senior Open from golfers in 46 states and the District of Columbia, as well as 28 foreign countries.

The U.S. Senior Open is one of 13 national championships conducted annually by the USGA, 10 of which are strictly for amateurs.
