The father-son team of Craig and Cody Roth of Bellingham, Wash. shot a 7-under par 65 to win the 8th Washington State Parent-Child Championship, held at Riverbend Golf Complex in Kent, Wash. This is the second title for the duo, having previously won this championship in 2012.
The championship was conducted by the Washington State Golf Association (WSGA).
“This is even better the second time,” said Craig. The team caught fire on the back nine, shooting a 31 to pull away from the field. “I’ll tell you what the difference was,” said Craig with a laugh. “I was hitting it and he (Cody) was putting it, which helped our team. It seems to be a pattern!”
Said Cody, “I’m a little older than when we won before, so we were laughing to each other how different the golf course is playing since the last time we played here (the championship was held at Riverbend in 2011 as well.). We were just hitting the ball on completely different lines today.” Added Craig, “Yes, he was about this tall (holding his hand chest high) when we played here before.”
Cody will be a sophomore this fall at Western Washington University in Bellingham, and plays on the WWU men’s golf team.
This year’s final leaderboard was crowded with past champions. The father-daughter team of Jacqueline and Terry Bendrick (2015) finished fourth; the father-son team of Brandon and Richard Cardwell (2009) finished seventh; the father-daughter team of Ravae and Ruben Canas (2011) finished tied for ninth, as did the father-son team of Doug and Roger Pierce (2014); and the father-son team of Jason and Mark Aspelund (2013) finished tied for 13th.
The championship was played in a Chapman Stroke Play format, with two players playing as partners, each playing from the teeing ground and each player playing his/her partner’s ball for the second shot. After the second shot, including par-3 holes, partners selected the ball with which they wished to score and then played that ball alternately to complete the hole.
The parent’s relationship with the child must be natural, adopted or stepchild. Partners could have more than one generation between them (i.e. grandfather-granddaughter).

Riverbend is owned and operated by the City of Kent. The golf complex is a public facility and consists of a championship 18-hole golf course, nine-hole par-3 course, driving range, and miniature golf. The championship course opened in 1989 and is consistently one of the busiest golf courses in the state, averaging 65,000 rounds per year.
