DuPont, Wash. – Mateo Fuenmayor of Beaverton, Ore. shot rounds of 68-67 to earn medalist honors over the 84-player field who competed today in the 36-hole U.S. Amateur qualifying at The Home Course in DuPont, Wash.

Claiming the other two available spots in this qualifier are Sean Kato of Redmond, Wash. and Cody Roth of Bellingham, Wash. Both players survived a playoff to claim the spots.

In Fuenmayor’s afternoon round, he was 1-over-par after six holes, 3-under for the day, but went 6-under over his remaining 12 holes, which included holing out from the fairway for an eagle on the par-4 ninth hole.

Fuenmayor is a rising sophomore on the Oregon State University men’s golf team. While being recruited by Oregon State, he was the No. 1-ranked junior player in Oregon, and had won the 2019 Pacific Northwest Section PGA Junior Boys’ Championship.

Kato, who won the 2017 Washington State Junior Championship and the 2020 Washington Men’s Amateur, is a rising senior on the Oregon State University men’s golf team. He played in the 2021 U.S. Amateur Four-Ball Championship, held in May at Chambers Bay.

Roth played four years on the Western Washington University men’s golf team. With his father Craig, Cody has won five Washington Parent-Child championships.

Fuenmayor, Kato and Roth will now advance to the 121st U.S. Amateur Championship, which will be held August 9-15 at Oakmont (Pa.) Country Club, with Longue Vue Club in Verona, Pa. serving as the championship’s stroke-play co-host.

Ian Siebers of Bellevue, Wash. is first alternate from this qualifier, while Alvin Kwak of Mukilteo, Wash. is second alternate.

Washington Golf (WA Golf) is the local representative of the United States Golf Association (USGA) and conducted this qualifier for the 2021 U.S. Amateur Championship.

To be eligible, golfers must be an amateur with a Handicap Index of 2.4 or less.
