Washington Senior and Super Senior Men's Amateur: Round One Recap

Brandes sets pace in Washington Senior Amateur; Evenson holds slim lead in Super Senior


Tom Brandes of Bellevue, Wash. shot 3-under-par 69 in today’s opening round of the 33rd Washington Senior Men’s Amateur, setting a fast pace in his quest to defend his title. He is looking for a sixth title in this championship. Brandes had four birdies on the day, against one bogey, and is the only player in the Senior Men’s field to break par on the 6500-yard layout.

In the 12th Super Senior Men’s Amateur, Rich Evenson of Mercer Island, Wash. shot 2-under 70, good enough for a 1-stroke lead over Rick Weihe of Bellingham, Wash. Evenson and Weihe are the only two players in the Super Senior field to break par on the Lake Spanaway layout, which is set up at 6038 yards for the Super Seniors. Defending champion Gudmund Lindbjerg of Port Moody, B.C. shot 3-over 75, and sits five shots back of Evenson.

Both championships are being held concurrently this week at Lake Spanaway Golf Course in Tacoma, Wash. They are conducted by Washington Golf. The second rounds of the 54-hole championships will be held tomorrow.
