Aspelund Duo Takes 5th Annual Washington State Parent-Child Championship

The father-son team of Jason and Mark Aspelund of Edgewood, Wash. shot a 4-under par 68 in winning the 5th Washington State Parent-Child Championship, held today at Lake Spanaway Golf Course in Spanaway, Wash.

The two finished birdie-birdie to win by a stroke over the team of Li Wang and Grace Wei, of Sammamish, Wash.

“I was lucky to have a partner with a hot putter,” said Jason, of his father, Mark. “He’s the one who won it for us on the last two holes.”

“It was great to be out with Jason,” said Mark. “It was relaxing and enjoyable.”

The Aspelund’s both play out of The Home Course in DuPont. Jason, who carries a 1.5 Index, will playing in the course’s club championship later this summer, as well as in the WSGA Mid-Amateur Championship, which will be held at Suncadia in late August.

This is their first time playing in the Parent-Child. “We’ll absolutely be back next year,” said Mark. “We’ll be back to defend our title!” Watch their interview here.

The team of David and Christopher Danforth of Redmond, Wash. won the net division with a 9-under par 63.

The championship was played in a Chapman Stroke Play format, with two players playing as partners, each playing from the teeing ground and each player playing his/her partner’s ball for the second shot. After the second shot, including par-3 holes, partners select the ball with which they wish to score and then play that ball alternately to complete the hole.
