At the Confluence Classic, a two-day collegiate tournament held Oct 22-23 at Veteran’s Memorial GC and Wine Valley Golf Club in Walla Walla, Wash., Brianna McNelly and Gabby Martinez of Whitworth University each had the rarest shot in golf on the same hole. Both posted a double-eagle score of 2 on the par-5 seventh hole at Wine Valley, during the second round of the tournament.
Martinez, a sophomore, was the first to hit her shot, striking a 6-iron from 192 yards. “The ball rolled up the hill to the back of the green, then rolled back and into the hole,” said Dave Hall, assistant coach for the women’s team, who was on the course watching the play.
Two groups later, McNelly, a senior, hit a hybrid from 205 yards on the same hole. “Her shot did the exact same thing, rolling past the hole, up the slope, and then back down into the hole,” Hall said. “I’m standing there, and I couldn’t believe it happened again.”
Whitworth finished second as a team in the tournament, which was their final event of the fall season. They will return to action in March 2024 to play the second half of their 2023-2024 schedule.
