Lauren Atkinson of Bow, Wash. leads the 23rd Washington State Women’s Amateur Championship after one round at Sunland Golf & Country Club in Sequim, Wash.
Atkinson, a Junior at Brigham Young University shot a one-over-par 73 and leads by one stroke heading into day two of the 54-hole championship. She made the turn at even-par, including one birdie. She made bogies on the first two holes of the back nine, but added another birdie on the way in to extend her lead on the field.
There are a trio of golfers just two shots off of Atkinson’s lead. Marianne Li of Bellevue, Wash. and a freshman at The University of California-Berkeley, Victoria Fallgren of Spokane, Wash who is Gonzaga University’s Assistant Golf Coach, and Lauryn Keating of Elma, Wash who is a member of Colorado University’s golf team all carded three-over-par 75’s to put themselves right into the mix going into the final two rounds of the championship.
Two-time WSGA Women’s Mid-Amateur champion (‘13, ‘14) Leslie Folsom of Tukwila, Wash. shot a six-over-par 78, to take a three shot lead going into the second round of the 7th Washington State Women’s Amateur Championship. 2013 Pacific Northwest Golf Hall of Fame Inductee Alison Murdoch of Victoria, BC is in second place just three shots off of the pace.
In the 17th Senior Women’s Amateur Championship, 2011 WSGA Senior Women’s Player of the Year and defending champion, Ginny Burkey of Eugene, Ore., leads by one stroke after a five-over-par 77 in today’s first round that included four birdies. Three-time WSGA Women’s Senior Amateur Champion (‘06, ‘07, ‘13) Lisa Smego of Olympia, Wash., and Kathy Provazek-Ross of Mercer Island, Wash. are both one shot back of Burkey after they both carded six-over-par rounds of 78.
After the first round of the 3rd WSGA Women’s Super-Senior Amateur Championship, 2015 WSGA Women’s Senior Player of the Year, Karen Madison of East Wenatchee, Wash. leads by three strokes after an opening round of seven-over-par 79. Sun Douthit of Steilacoom, Wash. is in solo second place after her round of ten-over-par 82. Defending Women’s Super-Senior Amateur champion, Mary Ryan of Renton, Wash. sits in third place after an opening round thirteen-over-par 85.
