Washington Women's Amateur Championships: Round 1 Recap

The opening rounds of the 27th Washington Women’s Amateur Championship, 11th Washington Women’s Mid-Amateur, 21st Washington Senior Women’s Amateur and 7th Washington Super Senior Women’s Amateur championships were held today at Gold Mountain Golf Club in Bremerton, Wash.

Brittany Kwon of Bremerton, Wash. holds a two-shot lead after the opening round of Women’s Amateur. She poured in five birdies, including birdies on the 17th and 18th holes, to finish the day with a 2-under-par 70.

Sitting in a tie for second place after rounds of even par 72 are Anastacia Johnson of Tacoma, Wash. and Jessica Mangrobang of Spokane, Wash. Kwon, Johnson and Mangrobang were the only players in the field to shoot even par or better.

Kwon is four-time WIAA 3A Individual State Champion and is a three-time WA Golf Junior Girls’ Player of the Year (2016-18). She just completed her freshman year as a member of the University of Washington women’s golf team.

In the Women’s Mid-Amateur, it’s a battle between two past champions as defending champion Tina Papatolis of Issaquah, Wash. and two-time champion (2017-18) Victoria Fallgren of Spokane, Wash. sit tied atop the leaderboard at 1-over-par.

2018 Senior Women’s Amateur champion Leslie Folsom of Tukwila, Wash. set the pace in the Senior Women’s Amateur, opening with a 4-over 76. Folsom, a two-time WA Golf Senior Women’s Player of the Year (2018-19) was 5-over thru 13 holes before righting the ship to finish 1-under on the last five.

Sunny Sue Kim of Bellevue, Wash. opened with a 5-over 77 to take the lead in the Super Senior Women’s Amateur. Kim will start tomorrow’s final round one-shot ahead of Kris Adams of Lake Tapps, Wash. and 2018 Super Senior Women’s Amateur champion Sue Ursino of Sammamish, Wash.

All four championships are being held concurrently this week on the Cascade Course at Gold Mountain and are being conducted by Washington Golf (WA Golf).
