Sam Warkentin (L) and Brittany Kwon, winners at the 2016 Washington Junior Golf Association State Championship.

In the final round, Warkentin stood on the tee of the par-3 192-yard 18th hole at historic Bellingham Golf & Country Club in a tie with Joe Highsmith of Lakewood, Wash. Warkentin then hit his tee shot to within one inch for a tap-in birdie and one-stroke victory. His three-day total of 6-under par 210 gave him his third consecutive boys overall title.

Last year, Warkentin was named the 2015 WSGA Junior Boys’ Player of the Year. In the fall, he will be a freshman playing on the University of Washington men’s golf team.

On the girls’ side, 15-year-old Brittany Kwon of Bremerton, Wash. secured her victory with a final round 1-over par 74. Her three-day total of 1-under par 217 gave her a 3-shot victory over Georgetown University commit Ashley Fitzgibbons of Sammamish. In 2014, Kwon won the Pacific Northwest Junior Girls’ Amateur, while just 13 years old at the time.

In all 258 boys and girls competed over three days to determine boys and girls state champions in age divisions of 8-11, 12-13, 14-15 and 16-17. The field is cut to roughly 85 total players after two rounds.
