In 2021, as COVID-19 continued to wreak havoc on schedules and once again Canada could not get their team across the border to compete in the North Pacific Junior Ladies (NPJL) Cup team matches leading to its cancelation, the Washington Junior Ladies Cup was born.
To give these young players a chance to compete regardless, the 16 top players from the Washington Junior Golf Association (WJGA) 2020 points list were invited to compete in this fun Curtis Cup-style match play format. The Golf Club at Hawks Prairie in Lacey, Wash. stepped up to host the event, and an amazing volunteer group joined in. Mother Nature cooperated, providing brilliant sunshine over the Memorial Day weekend.
On the Red Team were (left to right) Anastacia Johnson, Una Johnson, Kennedy Knox, Morgan Lee, Angela Park, Gihoe Seo, Claire Xu, Wenna Zhang, and Team Captain Patty Curtiss.
On the Blue Team were (left to right) Team Captain Chris Curtiss, Hannah Elaimy, Brooke Gelinas, Jillian Hui, Grace Lee, Gigi Lund, Makena Mehlert, Lauryn Nguyen and Suzie Tran.
The Red Team won the friendly competition, and will retain the “trophy poster” that all the players signed when they arrived for the competition.
The NPJL Cup matches is an annual event featuring four teams of six girls representing their state or province (WA, OR, ID and BC). The WJGA usually sends a team from Washington to compete in the NPJL, and created and organized this year’s WJL Cup.
