Robert Simpson plays 80 on his 80th

Robert Simpson celebrates after holing out on his 80th hole of the day, the par-3 eighth at Birch Bay.

On October 14, 2025, Robert Simpson, the handicap chair for the Birch Bay Village Golf Club in Blaine, Wash., celebrated his 80th birthday by playing 80 holes of golf in one day.

His first tee time was 7:01 a.m. and required a Tracer ball to find the ball in the dark. Nine hours and 56 minutes later, Bob had accomplished his mission to play “holes for years.”

(Actually, he played 81 holes so he could post his score for the final nine. That’s dedication to your handicap!)

This was not Simpson’s first “holes for years” celebration, however. He started doing it at age 65, and has played “holes for age” at 65, 70, 75 and now 80. “I only do it every five years because it takes me that long to recover,” he said with a laugh.
