Steph Curry’s Underrated Golf Tour holds event at Chambers Bay
Curry is deeply committed to impacting the lives of young athletes, creating opportunities for them in the golf community.
The Underrated Golf Tour held its fourth tournament of the year at Chambers Bay in University Place, Wash. on August 7-9.  NBA superstar (and avid golfer) Steph Curry founded Underrated Golf in 2019 to provide equity, access and opportunity to deserving student-athletes from underserved communities who may not otherwise be exposed to the full benefits of the sport. This is the second year of a full tournament schedule for the Underrated Golf Tour.    “Underrated Golf is committed to ushering in a new season of opportunities for student-athletes to showcase their talent in the game of golf,” said Curry. “This tournament series furthers our work to be a gateway for young, underrepresented golfers to unveil their extraordinary abilities and compete on renowned golf courses across the country.”   Organized in collaboration with the American Junior Golf Association (AJGA), the tour is completely free of charge to players, covering the cost of travel, accommodation and food.

“Everybody knows I love the game of golf and I couldn’t be more excited to extend this love to the best young players across the country,” Curry said.    This year, the tour conducted four tournaments, with the championship, the Curry Cup, being held Aug. 20-23, 2023 at Lake Merced Golf Club outside of San Francisco, Calif. The recent event at Chambers Bay was the final tournament before the Curry Cup.    For each tour stop, 96 athletes will participate in tournament style events and team building activities while simultaneously networking with college golf coaches and golf executives.   The top 12 boys and top 12 girls (see standings HERE ) of the entire tour will play at the Curry Cup, and two will be crowned the ultimate champions.   The mission of the tour is to increase the participation of competitive golfers from diverse backgrounds, and to engage corporate partners for mentoring, networking and visibility. The program is also addressing the gender gap in golf by providing female players with the same opportunities as their male counterparts. Players receive valuable exposure to collegiate golf programs, along with training, equipment, leadership panels and other benefits provided by tour sponsors. The Underrated Golf Tour plans to expand throughout the U.S. and globally, further diversifying the pool of junior, collegiate and professional players around the world.   Aligning with sponsors and ambassadors from around the golf industry, for the event at Chambers Bay the tour brought in, among others, Will Lowery, who had gained earlier notoriety as a competitor on Golf Channel’s series “Big Break” in 2011.    Lowery jokes that he gets recognized not just because he was on “ Big Break , ” but that he has one of the most unique golf swings in the country: he plays golf cross-handed.   As a champion for youth mentorship, Lowery partners with a number of organizations to create access and opportunity for the youth they serve. From Curry’s Underrated Golf Tour to Youth on Course to First Tee, Lowery works to remove barriers to entry to the game for young players.   Lowery continues to volunteer with The First Tee of Charlotte (N.C.), helping to introduce inner city youth to the game he loves. Growing up in inner-city Charlotte, Lowery knows well the struggles young kids go through. He also is starting the Will Lowery Foundation, focusing on childhood education through golf.
