Last year, the championships were held at Red Wolf Golf Club in Clarkston, Wash., where the Senior championship ended in exceptionally rare fashion. Seattle’s Paul Hogben claimed the title in a three-hole playoff, having aced the final hole to defeat Craig Larson. The Super Senior title went to Richard Jonson, who, along with Hogben, is returning to defend his title in their respective championships this year.
Olympia Country and Golf Club has hosted neither championship previously but is notable in WA Golf competition for being the venue where World Golf Hall-of-Famer and 1992 Masters Champion Fred Couples won the 1978 Washington Men’s Amateur. Former title holders of that championship playing this week include 1984 champ Ted Himka (Bellevue) and 1994 winner Karl Smith (Gig Harbor, Wash.).
Other past champions playing in the Senior Amateur include Tom Brandes (Bellevue), who has won the championship nine times, most recently in 2023, as well as Ken Wade, Erik Hanson and Bradley Karns.
Previous Super Senior champions in addition to Jonson include Norm Bradley and John Gallacher.
The Washington Senior and Super Senior Men’s Amateur championships are two of 14 held annually by Washington Golf.
