Jeff Wilson, a 47-year-old from Fairfield, Calif., shocked the field well into the evening with an eagle-eagle finish on the eighth and ninth holes at The Home Course for a course-record 62. His finish was six strokes better than anyone at The Home Course.
"I'm still trying to figure out what happened," said Wilson, a three-time medalist at the U.S. Mid-Amateur. "There were a lot of putts that went in."
His eagle on No. 8 came after a 3-wood from 262 yards went eight feet past the hole. On No. 9, he holed out a wedge from 131 yards.
"The ball came off the club just perfectly," he said. It's the second lowest score in the history of the U.S. Amateur and breaks the course record of 64 set by Carl Jonson of Bainbridge Island during the championship’s qualifier earlier this month.
