WSGA Falls Short in Playoff at 8th Annual PNGA Cup

On the second playoff hole, the team from British Columbia Golf (BC Golf) bested the team from the Washington State Golf Association (WSGA) to complete their come-from-behind win at the 8th Annual PNGA Cup, a Ryder Cup-style competition which was held over the past two days at Crane Creek Country Club in Boise, Idaho. This is the second PNGA Cup victory for BC Golf, its other win coming in 2009 which was also held that year at Crane Creek.

After the first day of play yesterday, the WSGA had held a slim lead of one point over the Oregon Golf Association (OGA), and 1.5 points over the Idaho Golf Association (IGA) and BC Golf. Today's play consisted of singles matches, and the team from BC Golf came roaring out of the gate. The WSGA would win seven points on the day, with Yasue Alkins of Olympia, Steve Rude of Graham, Doug Potter of Coeur d'Alene, Sean Packer of Seattle, and Erik Hanson of Kirkland all winning their matches decisively. But BC Golf would win a staggering 8.5 points on the day, tying WSGA for the lead, leaving both teams to head for a playoff.

To compete in the playoff, BC Golf and the WSGA each selected five players, one player from each category (men's, women's, senior men's, senior women's, and men's master-40). For BC Golf, teeing off were Kevin Carrigan of Victoria, Craig Doell of Victoria, Harper, Proteau and Murdoch. And teeing off for the WSGA were Mike Haack of Bellevue, Erik Hanson of Kirkland, Doug Potter of Coeur d'Alene, Shawn Farmer of Bellevue and Lisa Smego of Olympia.

The two teams tied the first playoff hole, the par-4 10th, then went to the long par-4 18th hole. BC Golf did not lose a single point on the second playoff hole, with only Haack and Farmer each winning just a half point. BC Golf won the second playoff hole, four points to one.

The Oregon Golf Association fell one point shy of making it into the playoff in their attempt to win its fourth consecutive PNGA Cup title. For a complete roster of players in the 8th PNGA Cup, please click here.

The PNGA Cup was created in 2006 by past PNGA President Dr. Jack Lamey as a way of continuing the friendship and partnership of the region's allied associations under the PNGA umbrella - British Columbia Golf, Idaho Golf Association, Oregon Golf Association, and Washington State Golf Association. The annual competition consists of 48 of the finest amateur golfers in the region. Each association sends a 12-person team consisting of eight men and four women. The representation includes four mid-amateur men of 25 years of age or older, two men of 40 years or older, two senior men of 55 years or older, two mid-amateur women of 25 years or older and two senior women of 50 years or older.

The Ryder Cup-style format includes four-ball and foursome matches the first day and singles matches on the second and final day. With three matches for each player, the championship allows each competitor to compete against players from each of the other associations.

Crane Creek Country Club previously hosted the PNGA Cup in 2009. The 9th PNGA Cup will be held at The Home Course in DuPont, Wash. in May 2014.

The PNGA Cup is one of 15 major, regional, amateur championships for men, women, juniors, and seniors conducted annually by the PNGA throughout the Northwest.
