Hodgkinson hangs tough, leads outright at Washington Men's Amateur

Woodinville, Wash. – Collin Hodgkinson of Beaverton, Ore. shot an even-par 72 in today’s second round of the 104th Washington Men’s Amateur to hold a slim lead going into tomorrow’s final round. The championship is being held at Bear Creek Country Club in Woodinville, Wash.

Hodgkinson’s round was highlighted by an eagle 2 on the par-4 first hole, in which he holed out from the fairway. Today’s 72 followed up his 4-under 68 in yesterday’s first round. He began this morning three shots back of first round leader Quinn Burwell of Seattle. Burwell, a rising senior at Roosevelt High School, set a new course record in yesterday’s first round, firing a 7-under par 65. He began today’s round with a 3-shot lead over four players, but his second round of 4-over 76 has placed him one shot back of Hodgkinson. Hodgkinson, a rising senior on the Oregon State University men’s golf team, had won the 2021 PNGA Junior Boys’ Amateur. Burwell has qualified for this year’s Junior PGA Championship, a national event. He recorded a runner-up finish at the Pacific Northwest PGA Junior Championship earlier this month. Defending Men’s Amateur champion Dane Huddleston, who settled for a tricky second round of 74, sits solo third. On a difficult Bear Creek layout, only six of the championship’s 123 players are under par after the first two rounds. Final round tee times start at 7:00am tomorrow morning, with the leaders teeing off at 10:10am. The Washington Men’s Amateur is considered a USGA Exemption Event, with the champion earning an exemption into the 2025 U.S. Amateur, being held at The Olympic Club in San Francisco, Calif., on August 11-17.
