Mitzel and Carey win Washington Men’s Four-Ball Championship; Hanson and Brandes run away with Senior Men’s title

Pullman, Wash. – Paul Mitzel and Johnny Carey, both of Seattle, shot rounds of 62-65 to win the 65th Washington Men’s Four-Ball Championship; while Erik Hanson of Kirkland and Tom Brandes of Bellevue shot rounds of 58-68 to cruise to a 12-shot victory in the 28th Senior Men’s Four-Ball.

Mitzel and Carey began the day tied for the lead with Reid Hatley of Hayden Lake, Idaho and Tyler Daniels of Walla Walla. They pulled away on the back nine and jumped to the top of the leaderboard to earn a two-shot victory.

This is the WA Golf title for Johnny Carey and second for Paul Mitzel, who won the 2021 Washington Mixed Chapman with partner Rachel Lewis.

Jay Dobberstein of Normandy Park and Brian Mattocks of Seattle won the Men’s title.

In the Senior Men’s Four-Ball, Hanson and Brandes entered the day with a comfortable 11-shot lead and were able to coast to victory in today’s final round. During yesterday’s 14-under par round, Tom Brandes fired a 62 on his own ball, which was a career best for the Pacific Northwest Golf Hall-of-Famer.

This marks the 19th state title for Brandes and the second for Hanson, who won the 2019 Washington Men’s Mid-Amateur.

Dave Ralston and Bill Hager, both of Bellingham, won the Senior Net title.

Mike Hickok of Moses Lake and Chris Degrazia of Lynwood took home the title in the Super Senior flight. Larry Daniels of Bremerton and Michael Jonson of Sammamish won the Super Senior flight Net title.

The Washington Men’s Four-Ball Championship was previously known as the Inglewood Best-Ball from 1956 until 1993, when in 1994 WA Golf began to administer the event and introduced the Senior Men’s Four-Ball.

The Men’s and Senior Men’s Four-Ball are two of 14 championships conducted annually by WA Golf.
