Nguyen builds on lead at Washington Women’s Amateur; Battistella continues to lead Mid-Amateur

Oak Harbor, Wash. – The second round of the 31st Washington Women’s Amateur and 15th Women’s Mid-Amateur championships were contested today at Whidbey Golf Club in Oak Harbor, Wash. The course remained a challenging test for the top Women’s Amateur and Mid-Amateur players from across the state.

Seattle’s Lauryn Nguyen built on her opening round lead in the Women’s Amateur by firing a 1-under par 71 in today’s second round. She started her round with a bogey on the first hole but quickly recovered by carding three birdies on the front nine. She made a lone bogey on the 16th hole on the back nine.

Nguyen holds a two-shot lead over Woodinville’s Niuniu Zhao, who shot an even par 72 in today’s round. Nguyen and Zhao will be paired together in tomorrow’s final group, along with Kennedy Knox of Normandy Park, who sits five shots off the lead.

Taya Battistella of Bellingham followed up her opening round 2-under par 70 with an 8-over par 78 in today’s second round of the Women’s Mid-Amateur. Battistella was seemingly on cruise control until a string of bogeys and a 9 on the 16th hole slightly tripped her up on the back nine. She holds a six-shot lead heading into tomorrow’s final round over Sarah Lawrence of Snohomish.

Tomorrow, the final rounds of the Women’s Amateur and Mid-Amateur will take place, with tee times starting at 7:30 am.
