Shek wins Washington Senior Women’s Amateur; Madison captures Super Senior; Defending champs continue to roll in Women’s Amateur and Mid-Amateur

Shek wins Washington Senior Women’s Amateur; Madison captures Super Senior; Defending champs continue to roll in Women’s Amateur and Mid-Amateur

Bainbridge Island, Wash.  – Kim Shek of Bellevue shot rounds of 75-78 to win the 24th Washington Senior Women’s Amateur, while Karen Madison of Spokane Valley fired rounds of 80-82 to win the 10th Super Senior Women’s Amateur by a single stroke.

Kim Shek began the day tied for the lead with defending champion Sandra Turbide of Maple Ridge, B.C. The two were paired together in today’s final round. Shek got off to a strong start in today’s round, shooting even par on the front-nine and building a three-shot lead. Turbide couldn't close the gap on the back-nine, allowing Shek to cruise to a three-shot victory.

Jenny Park

This is Kim Shek's first-ever WA Golf title. She plays out of Sahalee Country Club in Sammamish and was named the WA Golf Senior Women's Player of the Year last year.

Jenny Park from Bothell won the Senior Women's Net title with a 1-over par finish after Net rounds of 72-73.

Karen Madison

In the Super Senior, Karen Madison entered the day three shots back of defending champion Sunny Sue Kim of Bellevue. The two were paired together today.

Madison withstood a strong charge from Lisa Smego of Oro Valley, Arizona, who fired a 77 in today’s final round to climb up the leaderboard within one-shot of the lead. Madison finished with three straight pars in today’s final round to hold on to a one-shot victory.

This is the third Super Senior title for Karen Madison, who previously won this championship in 2016 and 2021. She was named the WA Golf Senior Women’s Player of the Year in 2015.

In the Super Senior, Karen Madison began the day three shots behind defending champion Sunny Sue Kim of Bellevue. They were paired together for the final round. Madison faced a strong challenge from Lisa Smego of Oro Valley, Arizona, who shot a 77 in today's round, narrowing the gap to just one shot. However, Madison held her ground and closed out the round with three consecutive pars, securing a one-shot victory.

This marks Karen Madison's third Super Senior title, having previously won the championship in 2016 and 2021. In 2015, she was named the WA Golf Senior Women's Player of the Year.

Kum Kim

Kum Kim of Everett captured the Super Senior Women’s Net title, finishing at 1-under par for the championship after rounds of 68-75.

In the Women's Amateur, Angela Zhang, the defending champion from Bellevue, carded an impressive 2-under par 69 in today's second round. Her round today stands as the lowest round of the championship thus far.

At just 14 years old, Zhang holds a commanding seven-shot lead heading into tomorrow's final round. She will be paired with Grace Lee of Bellevue and Carys Baek of Spokane, both members of the Gonzaga women's golf team.

In the Women's Mid-Amateur, Jacqueline Bendrick, a two-time defending champion from Mercer Island, maintained her steady performance, preserving her two-shot lead after posting a 5-over 76 in today's round. For the final round tomorrow, she will be paired with Sarah Lawrence of Monroe and Tina Papatolis of Issaquah.

The four championships are being held concurrently. The Women’s Amateur and Mid-Amateur being contested over 54 holes of stroke play on June 20-22, while the Senior and Super Senior championships consisted of 36 holes of stroke play on June 20-21.

The final round of the Women’s Amateur and Mid-Amateur championships will begin tomorrow, Thursday, June 22 at 7:30am.

The Women’s Amateur, Women’s Mid-Amateur, Senior Women’s Amateur, and Super Senior Women’s Amateur are four of the 14 championships conducted annually by WA Golf.
