FAQs

Course Rating Questions

Washington Golf aims to rate each member course every 6–7 years as part of its regular course measurement and rating program. Courses that are newer (less than 10 years old) or have recently undergone renovations may be rated more frequently to ensure accuracy.

Course rating services are provided free of charge for member clubs, while non-member clubs may request a rating for a fee of $1,500 per nine holes plus expenses. Clubs interested in scheduling a rating can contact Washington Golf to get started.

During a course rating visit, a Washington Golf rating team evaluates each hole to measure overall playing difficulty. The team assesses effective playing length and ten obstacle factors for both a scratch golfer and a bogey golfer. The course is not played during the official evaluation, though the team may play before or after the visit for additional insight. After the visit, collected data is analyzed using USGA software, reviewed by the Course Rating Review Committee, and finalized ratings are then released to the club.

Course Rating™ measures the expected score for a scratch golfer under normal playing conditions and represents the course’s overall difficulty. Slope Rating™ compares how much more difficult the course plays for a bogey golfer relative to a scratch golfer. While the scratch golfer rating becomes the official Course Rating, the bogey golfer rating is primarily used to calculate the Slope Rating.
